While scientists study how nature works, engineers create new things, such as products, websites, environments, and experiences. Because engineers and scientists have different objectives, they follow different processes in their work.
Scientists perform experiments using the scientific method ; whereas, engineers follow the creativity-based engineering design process.
Diagram of the Scientific Method. The scientific method starts with a question, and background research is conducted to try to answer that question. If you want to find evidence for an answer, or an answer itself, you construct a hypothesis and test that hypothesis in an experiment. If the experiment works and the data is analyzed you can either prove or disprove your hypothesis.
If your hypothesis is disproved, then you can go back with the new information gained and create a new hypothesis to start the scientific process over again. The engineering design process begins by defining a problem and completing background research on the problem.
Requirements are specified and a solution is chosen. A prototype of the solution is built and then tested. If the solution built meets the requirements then the results can be shared. If the solution does not meet all the requirements then another solution is thought of and tested. Each iteration should use the data from the previously tried solution to meet all of the initial requirements.
Keep in mind that although the steps are listed in sequential order, you will likely return to previous steps multiple times throughout a project. It is often necessary to revisit stages or steps in order to improve that aspect of a project. Both scientists and engineers contribute to the world of human knowledge, but in different ways.
Scientists use the scientific method to make testable explanations and predictions about the world. A scientist asks a question and develops an experiment, or set of experiments, to answer that question.
Engineers use the engineering design process to create solutions to problems. An engineer identifies a specific need: Who need s what because why?

And then, he or she creates a solution that meets the need. In real life, the distinction between science and engineering is not always clear. Scientists often do some engineering work, and engineers frequently apply scientific principles, including the scientific method.
Much of what we often call "computer science" is actually engineering—programmers creating new products. Your project may fall in the gray area between science and engineering, and that's OK.
Many projects, even if related to engineering, can and should use the scientific method. However, if the objective of your project is to invent a new product, computer program, experience, or environment, then it makes sense to follow the engineering design process.
Important Note: Most, but not all, science fairs accept engineering projects completed using the engineering design process.
Some even encourage it.Several different models have been developed in efforts to help communicate the engineering design process. This is only a small sampling of the many different models that describe engineering design. The Massachusetts Department of Education is credited with producing the first state-level standards that included engineering-related learning expectations for K students. Their model of the engineering design process included eight steps in a repeating loop.
Engineering Is Elementary EiE is a program developed by the Museum of Science, Boston, to teach engineering to students in elementary school. Their model of the engineering design process uses simple terms to define 5 steps. The EiE model is a cycle, with no explicit starting or end point. Their program encourages students to work through all five steps, but they recognize that engineers can jump between steps or work on just one or two steps before passing their work on to another team.
More about the EiE model of the engineering design process can be found on their website. This model emphasizes how designers may to jump back and forth between some steps and possibly skip other entirely. The UTeach Engineering project at the University of Texas looked at 11 different models of the engineering design to develop their multi-level representation of the process.
Some steps are broken down further into tasks or loops. In addition, this model recognizes that solutions are not final, and that designs will need to evolve over time.Civil service exam reviewer clerical operations

Project-based learning engages learners of all ages—and fosters STEM literacy. Engineers ask critical questions about what they want to create, whether it be a skyscraper, amusement park ride, bicycle or smartphone. These questions include: What is the problem to solve? What do we want to design? Who is it for? What do we want to accomplish? What are the project requirements? What are the limitations?
What is our goal? This includes talking to people from many different backgrounds and specialties to assist with researching what products or solutions already exist, or what technologies might be adaptable to your needs.
You work with a team to brainstorm ideas and develop as many solutions as possible. This is the time to encourage wild ideas and defer judgment! Build on the ideas of others! Stay focused on topic, and have one conversation at a time!
Remember: good design is all about teamwork!
Help students understand the brainstorming guidelines by using the TE handout and two sizes of classroom posters. For many teams this is the hardest step! Revisit the needs, constraints and research from the earlier steps, compare your best ideas, select one solution and make a plan to move forward with it. Building a prototype makes your ideas real! These early versions of the design solution help your team verify whether the design meets the original challenge objectives.
Push yourself for creativity, imagination and excellence in design. Does it work? Does it solve the need? Communicate the results and get feedback. Analyze and talk about what works, what doesn't and what could be improved.
Discuss how you could improve your solution. Make revisions.
Draw new designs. Iterate your design to make your product the best it can be. There are always many good possibilities for solving design problems. If you focus on just one before looking at the alternatives, it is almost certain that you are overlooking a better solution. Good designers try to generate as many possible solutions as they can.
Look at whether each possible solution meets your design requirements. Some solutions probably meet more requirements than others. Reject solutions that do not meet the requirements. Development involves the refinement and improvement of a solution, and it continues throughout the design process, often even after a product ships to customers.
A prototype is an operating version of a solution. Often it is made with different materials than the final version, and generally it is not as polished. Prototypes are a key step in the development of a final solution, allowing the designer to test how the solution will work. The design process involves multiple iterations and redesigns of your final solution.
You will likely test your solution, find new problems, make changes, and test new solutions before settling on a final design. Professional engineers always do the same, thoroughly documenting their solutions so that they can be manufactured and supported.Tool upgrades can make your tools work faster (fewer hits to fell a tree), more efficiently (more water in your can and reaches more crops), and even be able to hit special items lower level tools cannot.
You need to save up resources to upgrade, and you should time when you perform the upgrades. With that in mind, time your upgrades for a window on the calendar where the effect of missing the tool will be minimized or totally removed.
